Ooma Telo Handset February 10, 2010 Robert W. Hughes (Glen Allen, VA) I love my Ooma system and the fact that I can get free telephone service. But I was really disappointed with the handset. I returned it within a few days. It was cheaply made, felt bad in my hand, the sound quality was not good and I could hear static on the line. I bought a wireless VTech system with 5 handsets and plugged the base station into my Ooma unit. I now have free calls and the sound quality is great. The VTech handsets work perfectly with Ooma and they are much better made than this Tele Handset.
More Like A Beta Product Still In Development February 9, 2010 Jordan D. Anderson (Denver, CO) After hearing about the Telo and companion handset in January '09, I was genuinely excited about giving Ooma a try. I had been with Vonage for six years and grew tired of the ever escalating monthly bill, including many misleading fees. So I waited, patiently, until the product was released. Then I waited another few weeks for the price to drop. I finally purchased the Telo base with a free bundled handset.
While I am very happy with Ooma service, the handset leaves a lot to be desired. Here are my key observations:
Positives:
+Instant Second Line: Seldomly used but a unique feature only available with Telo
+No Static or Interference
+Call screening away from base through handset
+Future Feature - Contact sync with one's email/contact provider, though this is not enabled yet
+Direct connect with Telo base
Negatives:
-Mediocore call quality and certainly nothing close to "HD", whatever that means
-Speakerphone echoes and isn't practical for two way conversations but okay for when one is on hold
-Menu/interface is slow and antiquated by today's standards
-Industrial design is attractive in my opinion, but I agree with other revewers that sharp plastic edges were a poor ergonomic choice for something one holds in their hand for long periods of time
-NiMH batteries are okay but I would like to see more lithium ion options in cordless phones
-No Bluetooth yet, and no 3.5mm handset jack
For $50, this is a poor value among cordless phones. For a bit more one could get a 4 handset DECT set from Panasonic or VTech and get much better quality. Sure, you would give up the 2nd line and call screening but I personally don't think the tradeoff is worth it. My advice: Don't buy this phone. Perhaps holdout for Ooma to come out with a new model, but even then I'd wait for some serious reviews before taking the plunge. This was a poorly designed product that was way overhyped by the Company.
Ooma needs to replace with better model February 8, 2010 smart shopper (usa) I received the Ooma handset for free with purchase of the Ooma Telo from my local electronics store. I noticed that this handset has fair to poor reviews on various websites. I have to agree with most negative reviews of this handset due to the following: Extremely poor battery life. The battery quickly drains when handset is in use (no more than 30 minutes use). The battery fully drains in 24-36 hours if not resting on charger. The call quality is horrible. The sound is distorted and cuts off frequently. I have had occassions where I can hear people on the line but they cannot hear me at all. It appears the phone goes into mute by itself. The phone has sharp edges that wraps around the phone where both the front and back side meet. The one good thing I can say about this handset is that it links up very easily to the Ooma Telo. If you are considering purchasing this phone, I suggest purchasing another brand of cordless phone and performing a direct connect to the Ooma Telo base instead via the phone jack.
What a waste! February 7, 2010 Joseph R. Faulkner 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am sorry to say that I will be returning my OOMA Telo device. The telephone is a great concept but it cannot deliver
what is advertised. I did not hear any HD quality calls, I received better reception using my 5.8ghz Uniden. This device is
very cheaply made from the plastic to the screen. You cannot import contacts that you save on the OOMA website to the
device. The battery lasts about 1/2 a day off the charger and when the phone charges you can hear pulsating that is sure to
drive your pets crazy. I also followed the instructions on pairing the device with the hub and a no go. I had to manually go
into the phone and tell it to pair which is not covered in the easy setup steps. The calls made from the speaker phone could
not be understood by the other party plus it dropped my call like a cell phone after 43 minutes. Without this device you
cannot take full advantage of the Premier 2nd line. Maybe I would subscribe to Premier if they actually made a more durable
device but for now I am going to opt out until they can get this together. Don't buy it because if it cannot deliver the full
potential that is advertised for the Premier service.
Love it! February 5, 2010 Wiiliam B. Bolger Jr. 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Okay, it not perfect. But I LOVE IT! All the options make it all worth your wild. I am saving $100 a month. Tip for buyers. Don't order the handset. They offer it free with their premier package, or free number transfer. They said it will take about 4 weeks for number transfer but it only took about 1.
