A lot of people have written about being unable to activate the ooma online, getting an error code of 1000/300. I tried several browsers on both a mac and a pc and nothing. I called customer service twice- the first rep sounded like he was a complete noob. Very nice but just was struggling a bit with my problem. The second rep seemed to have been through this before so he was very helpful. I write all of this (on top of the voip unit working great so far) because this is part of the unit setup. The packaging materials say it only takes 15 minutes to set up, but for many people getting the error, it takes much longer. Also, once you have tried the activation process on the ooom website and fail, you *do not* have to reissue your credit card info, they already have it. Also, when you initially try to activate, you will see a list of phone numbers available for you to choose - if you have your heart set on a particular phone number you see and the online activation does not complete, wait 10 minutes, *then* call a rep because phone numbers are reserved for 10 minutes during the online process. During that 10 minutes, a rep cannot activate your ooma with that particular phone number until it is released after the 10 minute hold time.
The unit itself is incredibly light, you can change the brightness of the lights on the unit or just turn off all lighting completely. If online activation had actually worked, then yes, it would have taken 5 minutes to set up. Connect the ooma to a ruoter/modem, connect your favorite phone to the ooma, and you're set. The ooma has its own unique ring tone that can't be changed.
The credit card info is for the free two months of Premiere service, which you have to sign up for - it's a gimmick but you can then cancel before the two months are up, no charge to your credit card. It's about $10 a month or about $120 a year (for a one year contract) but they send you a free ooma handset, which hasn't been reviewed very well.
With the rising costs of cable/optical internet (i.e. the Evil Fios) the ooma makes sense for me. Fios is raising the minimum internet speed to 15/5 from the earlier 10/2 available (purposely unannounced to customers, mailings will be sent out in April to notify current subscribers about the PRICE INCREASE) in a bundle for $99/mo. Now the minimum for existing customers is $109.99 for the bundle (TV/internet/phone) and with so many cell phones out there, who needs a home line anymore? For $85/mo I get Fios TV and internet and then I have the ooma, and it will pay for itself.
Don't pay more than $200 for this unit. The price continues to drop. I still think $200 is overpriced as it is.

It has been three and one-half weeks since we activated our Ooma. Since our land-line phone number has not yet been ported over (they said that it will take 3-4 weeks) we have only put the system to very limited use, actually running two phone systems in the house. We chose a temporary number upon Ooma activation.
We did have a problem with our WiFi network generating static on our 2.4 GHz phones and wound up buying new DECT6.0 phones. The new phones have been clear as a bell.
Overall, for the use so far, the Ooma has been great. If you have a cable phone, the switch to Ooma is a no-brainer.

Purchased this item to avoid monthly telephone charges for my business. Works like a dream! Been using it since December 2009 and no problems so far. No one is able to tell that I'm on a DSL line instead of a phone line. Went ahead and purchased the premier service and received the extra handset. Now I have two phone numbers for my business. The only problem I have is using the second line for the fax, so that's why I gave it 4 stars for functionality. Other than that, I am very pleased with the unit.
Ooma: Say goodbye to telephone bills March 8, 2010

I recently contacted my VOIP provider of 5 years and asked if they could offer a better deal. They insisted they could not. So i started researching and stumbled on ooma. Long story short, I said goodbye to previous VOIP and hello to ooma. Funny thing is that when they realized I was serious about cancelling, all of a sudden they pulled out a 50% off offer. That just upset me more. I've had ooma now for about 2 months and am very happy. The number port took a while but oh well. The device was cheaper on amazon ($229) than from ooma direct ($249), free ship & no tax. Nothing bad too say at this point. Time will tell.

Read lots of reviews. One thing I never was sure of was about call forwarding, which I later found was a Premium item. But the unit installed fast and I used the Wall connection to keep my old service active for receiving call until my number ports in a month or so. Essentially you plug the telephone wire into the connector on the Ooma called Wall, your phone system into the Phone jack on the unit, and this allows you to place calls using Ooma, receive calls using the existing telephone wiring to your house.
Calls were clear even though I unhooked one of four computers from the router, plugged in the Ooma, and connected that computer to the Ooma so it is still on the network. Ooma was ready with a steady Blue Icon on top in about five minutes. I had already activated the account using the Activation Code on the Ooma label using my computer, so no reset was necessary once I plugged in all the cables and the power cord. The cord connection was secure on my Ooma, not as some reported in previous reviews I read.
I changed my preferences, and decided on the Premium service for at least a year for $80 more since I was porting a number that normally would cost #40, free with Premium (I wanted call forwarding and multi-ring that also allows me to answer calls with my cell phone). For $10 a month it seems reasonable since I was paying $70 for less features.
So far I am very pleased! Can't wait to get rid of the phone carrier and save $60 a month.
