5 out of 5 stars Great Phone   August 30, 2010
M. Bliven (Omaha, Nebraska)
I'm in the military serving overseas and desperately wanted to keep in contact with those at home. I considered Vonage, Magic Jack and Skype primarily. Bottom line, Skype was best hands down. I bought a Skype In number for like $20 per year after discounts, so my family can call me for free. However, I didn't like being tethered to a computer. I'd heard of Skype phones, but hadn't heard much good about them. I did my homework and finally decided to try this phone. Well, I couldn't be happier with it. The sound quality is GREAT! I'm hard of hearing but can hear people on the other end just fine. The range is very good. My family says they can hear me just like I was using a landline. The phone is very easy to setup. The charge on the battery is outstanding. I can take the phone with me as I travel and can be used in any hotel with wi-fi or any internet cafe. It has been worth every cent I sent on it and should last for years. I would add a speakerphone if I was making it, but I can definitely live without it.

Its a great product, especialy for old people who don't like to sit infront of computers, I am calling my family overseas for free (Skype), they are online all the time.

Two missing features would heave made this device the best:

1- Hands free (loud speaker - mic).
2- More ring tone options

4 out of 5 stars Great for the price   June 21, 2010

Like others, I'd never heard of the IPEVO company. Since they're Taiwanese, I figured that they probably made a reasonably good product, and so I went ahead and ordered two (one for me, one for my girlfriend). Here are some random tidbits for those wondering whether to purchase this Skype phone, or to purchase others (which are significantly more expensive!).

- Upon arrival, you have to charge the battery for about ~5 hours prior to use.

- The first time you turn it on, you are greeted with language options of English, Japanese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

- Overall, the phone feels a little bit like cheap plastic, but not overly so. Despite the slightly cheap feel, it also has a good weight, and it doesn't feel fragile; I think that it'd be fine if I dropped it.

- The form factor is great. It's about the size and weight of a small Nokia phone. It reminds a lot of the kind of phones they have in Taiwan, actually.

- Startup and connection is slow. If you go from turned off to connected to Skype, expect it to take a minute or two. Once it's on and connected it's fine. Connecting to a wifi spot can also take a little bit of time.

- The English translation is fine, but some menu options are cut off (they go off the side of the screen due to length). You would expect that the menu options would scroll to show the text that's cut off of the screen when you highlight that particular option, but it doesn't. It's just cut off. This isn't a big problem, though, since you should have no problem figuring out what the menu option is supposed to say.

- The battery life is excellent. Mine lasts a good part of a week off the charger. I'm not sure the talking battery life, but I've had two hour conversations with still plenty of battery to spare.

- The voice volume is adequate. It's definitely not a loud phone -- both the other party's voice volume and your own voice volume -- but both parties should have little problem hearing, whether it be Skype phone-to-Skype phone or Skype phone-to-computer.

- I've had plenty of dropped calls, but I attribute that to the sometimes dubious connections I get calling from the US to Taiwan. I've had plenty of 40-minute uninterrupted calls, too.

- There is an option to automatically connect to open wifi networks as you walk around. I have no idea how this will affect the battery life as I've never used it, but it's a pretty cool feature.

- As another review said, there is no SMS option (i.e., Skype messaging).

- I don't have any Skype credit, but this phone appears to be able to utilize all of Skype's pay-features, as well.

- Sometimes when you connect to Skype, other people still don't see you as logged in. To fix this, you can just go into the menu and change your status message or mood, or anything else. That will make sure you're actually logged in to Skype.

- The phone has a built-in update feature, but there haven't been any firmware update, yet.

In any case, I'm happy with this product.

I owned a Netgear SPH200D so when I read the reviews I was expecting a little more.
Pros: relatively reliable. Easy to use. Good battery life.
Cons: small, no speaker phone

4 out of 5 stars a good solution   April 23, 2010
Miguel Jose Princz
This phone is very easy to set and use. The only anoying issue is the relative long time it needs to boot..
Audio quality is very good. Wifi sensitivity is nothing to write home about... my eeepc 901 "hears" my wifi access point with more signal than this phone.
I would, nevertheless, buy it again!!!
