5 out of 5 stars Puchased it for Teenager WORKS GREAT   December 16, 2008
Richard C. Lafromboise
I purchased Magic Jack for my 14 year old teenager, Installation was a breeze Magic jack install and updated automatically. The ISP connection She has is DSL at around 1Mbps and voice quality is excellent, no drops or pops. I would highly recommend Majic Jack to any one looking for a second or non primary line. $20 bucks a year cant be beat.

4 out of 5 stars Have no problems so far.   December 9, 2008

Its funny how alot of reviews that are bad been posted, well i cannot speak for someone's experience, but mine so far have been good so far.
Once u have a great internet connection and good specs on your computer, u will have little or no problems with your calls.
The only draw back is having your computer on all the while, which kinda a sucks with the light bill.
So far i have been saving alot with this device.

4 out of 5 stars Pro's and Con's   November 20, 2008

After a bit less than one month of usage, here is my input on the MagicJack product:

Pro's:
- Inexpensive
- Voice quality, local and international, quite good (better than cell and near, if not equal, to landline)
- Works with regular landline type phones
- I haven't yet had any call quality or dropped signal problems as mentioned in other reviews

Con's:
- Requires computer to be on full time
- Takes forever to boot
- insists on being in the foreground while booting
- Won't let my computer hibernate or go on standby
- Limited operating system support. Should work with Linux boxes.

I'm in the process of setting up an old XP based laptop to be dedicated to the MagicJack. I'll have about $150 invested in the equipment when I'm done. This will allow me to turn my main computer off when I'm not using it. It should also reduce my electical usage since the laptop will be a minimal configuration machine with only one purpose; running the Magic Jack.

Overall, I recommend the Magic Jack but suggest using it with a cheap low power consumption dedicated computer.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it   September 26, 2008

The device itself is rather interesting, but it rarely works. The software requires your computer always to be turned on and left logged on, instead of running as a service. The biggest problem though is the sound quality. It sounds much worse than a cell phone with lots of crackling and it often hangs you up. Also, if you chat with tech support they just read through the knowledge base, which you most likely already did, and their ability to write English is terrible. It may be a cheap phone bill but you're better off just not having a phone if you want to save money.

I've been using Magic Jack for about 4 months and have had no difficulties at all with it. MJ provides you with a local phone number which is great, you get connected quickly, and the sound quality is reliably good ! I have been using Skype for years, but Skype does have its days. I use my Magic Jack phone when Skype's call quality is lacking; it's a great back-up.

Like Skype, it gives you the luxury of a different phone number if you are doing business from home, but don't want the little ones answering business calls or if you have an older relative in a different state and you want to provide her with a local phone number with which to reach you.

I really like MJ and will renew my service next year.
