They block calls to some numbers March 8, 2010 R. F. Perry (Fishers, IN USA) I was looking for a VOIP solution where I could dial from my computer or a contact list and use my regular desk phone and my Plantronics wireless headset. I am on a lot of conference calls and a wireless headset is fantastic.
MagicJack looked like the solution since you can dial from your computer or phone and use any phone. Unfortunately it is fatally flawed. The first problem was the software. It always runs, is slow and a third of the application is advertising asking you to buy more. In the menus it is advertising asking you to buy more. If you log into my.[...] they will ask you to buy more. It is "as seen on TV" all the freaking time. Horrible.
There is no way to import contacts into the software. You can't end the software without killing it in a task manager. The software was a significant issue for me.
Then I tried to call my company's voice conference line to join a conference call. My call was re-routed to magicjack's conference number with no explanation. I contacted them via live chat and they said that my conference service needed to request a connection? That didn't make sense to me but I contacted them anyway. They said that a number of customers had complained that MJ was blocking their numbers because MJ has a competitive service. I asked MJ for an email address where I could request further information and Magicjack chat said they did not have one and I could not call or email them at all.
So they advertise all the time, block calls to competitors and refuse to let you discuss it with them. Amazing.
Pros:
- can dial from either the phone or your computer
- can keep a list of contacts
- low cost
Cons:
- They block some numbers and do not tell you that
- constant advertising
- obtrusive software
- mine won't hang up w/o clicking end in the software
So maybe there is a different story to the call blocking but Magicjack won't communicate with me to tell me that. This small piece of junk is going back right now.

Amazing for the price! March 5, 2010 R. Beck (Minnesota, USA) I bought the MagicJack to work with my new cordless phones that I bought. For my cordless phones I'm using the VTech LS6245 which works perfect with the MagicJack! The sound quality is amazing! I called my mother half way across the country and she heard me loud and clear with no issues, no cutting out, etc.
I have been reading a lot of bad reports about this product online and that is why I was hesitant of buying it. However, I concluded that most of the people that were writing bad about the product either A.) Are using the MagicJack with a really LOW END computer or B.) Their internet speed is really slow. I would suggest to NOT use the MagicJack if you have either of these.
I'm using the MagicJack on a desktop of mine that has a Quad Core processor with 8GB DDR3 RAM. I also have Comcast cable internet which provideds 15mbps down speed / 2mbps up speed. I would suggest to NOT use the MagicJack if you are only a really slow DSL plan around $20/month. Most likely your speed is not going to cut it for the MagicJack. If you are on a really low end high speed internet connection, I would recommend to try the MagicJack on it first and see how it works and if it's bad then try calling your internet company and upgrade your internet speed. Also remember to be using a semi-decent computer!
My desktop computer is running 24/7 because I use it as a server. It holds all my music, photos, movies, software, etc. The desktop doesn't even have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. It just sits there in the living room tucked away which is really nice because as long as the computer is running and my MagicJack is plugged into the computer I always get phone service. So in reality, it's like I have my own land line but I only pay the $19.99/year! I am really happy I got the MagicJack. I would recommend it to anyone who has a good computer to run it on and good internet!
It does have some faults. However, you get what you pay for in this world. So for instance, you cannot disable the MagicJack voicemail. I would have liked to do this because my cordless phones have an answering machine and I can't use it because the MagicJack voicemail picks up before the answering machine does. Another fault is when a voicemail is left, I have no indication that I have a voicemail unless I look on the computer screen (in my case I don't have a computer screen since I'm using my MagicJack on my server) so I have to just call my MagicJack voicemail periodically. MagicJack's support is not good at all! They have you do the same steps over and over. I would highly recommend to use Google for any problems you have with the MagicJack. Overall though, now that the product is working and I haven't had any problems with it since, I am recommending it. Because of these quircks this is why I am giving it 4 stars.

I cannot review a product I have never received! I order3ed on Jan 31 and today Mar 3 I still have not received the product... and worst yet, someone is using my money in the interim before I am reimbursed.
Dont Waste Your Money March 1, 2010 Jeffrey Mcintire I bought one which worked for approx 2 weeks. The quality on my end wasn't too bad it did cut in and out every once in a while. People on the other end said it sounded like I was far away and a little hard to hear. After about two weeks it just quit working. Tech support spent hours working remotely on my computer and finally told me it was defective. This also has to be plugged in to a running pc 24/7.
I recently bought an ooma telo which is 10 times better. The sound quality is excellent on both ends, my number can be ported, and it doesn't have to be connected to a computer.
